Rest your head upon my shoulder
I will help you oust your fears
We won’t sweep them neath the carpet
With a power vac, they’ll disappear
–
Rest your head upon my chest
I will help unload your cares
We won’t stack them in the freezer
An oven’s lit, we’ll toss them there
–
When your fears are gone and cares are charred
Your head will leave its resting place
Then my heart and amiable desires
Will rest with you in faith and grace

Your use of common household appliances to alleviate “pain/suffering” is clever and effective. I may be reading too much into it, but for me, the power is in how an industrialized society has all these devices to make life easier, and yet we still need our “fears” sucked away & our “cares” burned to a crisp. It’s like, if we don’t have enough *real* problems, we will create some new ones. Not to make light of the problems/struggles we all face….that’s just the interpretation speaking strongest to me right now.
I think I read that into this poem b/c of a recent encounter I had with an exchange-student from Africa. He literally grew up in jungles & villages that were constantly being raided & bombed by violent militia. Yet his smile and his enthusiasm for life was greater than any I’ve encountered by any U.S. citizen I’ve known. He had known of our luxuries, but he also seemed to be blissfully unaware of the stresses we so often create for ourselves.
This is a great piece….really made me think!

You are absolutely right. Sometimes after I finish, I have to sit back and try to interpret what I just wrote lol. Your friend from Africa is very fortunate. I find that once we experience the worst and the best, we often grow to have more appreciation for life! Sometimes it’s sunshine and sometimes it’s rain…. and we are all under the same sky no matter where we are 🙂

The cadence of it was beautiful, but I think what I found most remarkable is the kind of imagery you used, all very homely. I loved it.
