An elegant train streaming down the aisle
To meet the spruced gent, waiting eagerly
To taste the flavour of the damsel’s smile
As soon as he unveils the mystery
.
Her beauty hid by the trousseau she wears
Makes brisk heartbeats gaily anticipate
The duets they’ll witness, throughout the years
When twain infuse and both their joys inflate
.
A round of cheers preps the enlivened groom
To swear before the audience with pride
To love her till the day they seal his tomb
As he adorns the finger of his bride
.
She gives a lingering tear-joy response
Then he savours the saccharin at once

Very nicely done! I am so glad you shared it. As you know, I have a love affair with sonnets, your sonnet shows just why that is. Sonnets force you to remove all the fluff of emotions and communicate your feelings with strength. Free verse can do the same but more times than not, they simply rambles on and on. The very structure of sonnet makes the poet get on with it and express their emotion succinctly. When it is done right, it is a powerful message. Yours is done right.

This is a beautiful love poem. Your word choices throughout this piece are terrific. I can’t imagine any reader who’s ever been married not being able to identify with this poem. Enjoyed all of it, but the second stanza stands out as my favorite:
“Her beauty hid by the trousseau she wears
Makes brisk heartbeats gaily anticipate
The duets they’ll witness, throughout the years
When twain infuse and both their joys inflate”

😀 Thank you, New View! Want to tell me why this verse stands out to you? hehe
By the way, this is my very first shy attempt in writing a sonnet, lol. It was a bit of a challenge to get each line to be 10 syllables but I was excited to try. I don’t always force form in poetry but this was worth the effort. Thanks for your kind words 😀

I think this verse stands out b/c it seems like a genuine bonding for the two. I read this stanza melodically, and can envision the bridegroom beside himself with awe of her beauty & the joyous anticipation you write of. It’s vivid. And she’s glowing in spite of having her beauty covered. “Duets”—I think of them dancing / “years”—I envision a love established and rooted in commitment; not simply an emotional high / “infuse”—the “two become one” embracing this time-honored teaching and giving honor to each other / “joys inflate”—the ultimate expression of contentment: joy. Not happiness which is fleeting, or fun which is so conditional. But joy—a peace they can only know with each other as the bond grows stronger.

😀 I like the way you have dissected the poem and and taken the time to interpret even individual words. There are a few hidden meanings in it too. I deliberately made it subtle because I like my poetry to be left to the interpretation of the reader. However, very few will take the time to contemplate the meaning as you do. I’m humbled by your interest in my work. Thanks a lot! 😀

Ahh Terry. It’s unfortunate that life doesn’t always go the way we want it but I’ve come to realize that often it’s for our own good. Thanks for the comment. I hope you’re doing well and that all your hurt is long gone. hugs xx
